The Strongest Link

When one of the UK’s top outdoor cameramen was commissioned to shoot broadcast quality video of a forthcoming ascent of Mount Everest he knew he had a real technical challenge on his hands.

The plan was to equip three Sherpas with head mounted cameras that would enable them to record and transmit their assent in real time.   Live film was to be transmitted, via a microwave link, to the editing suite located in a tent several thousand feet below.

All the equipment had to be totally reliable, there would be only one chance to film this action, re-tracing their steps to re-shoot, should a failure occur, was out of the question.  The severe operating conditions normally encountered at 29,000 feet on Mount Everest could quickly lead to signal failure unless interconnecting cable and connectors were carefully chosen.  Being known for their flexible and creative approach to problem solving in support of the broadcast industry, an urgent call to COAX Connectors was made.

Peter Roberts, Business Development Manager at COAX takes up the story: “We decided that our N Type male to SMA female connectors would be perfect for the job. They are manufactured in house at our factory in Twickenham, and tested exhaustively to the highest standards. We were able to supply within 24 hours and these came through magnificently.”
